Explaining Bits: Checking ERC20-based tokens using EtherScan
If you want to check the recent state of your ERC20-based tokens you can use the online service EtherScan. We will show you how this works in this article.
The first step to check your tokens is to open the website www.etherscan.io. You will see the following site:
EtherScan is the leading Ethereum Blockchain Explorer. They provide a platform for searching, confirming and validating transactions made through the Ethereum Blockchain. This allows us to lookup a valid Ethereum address and all transactions related to it.
To search for a specific address, enter it in the input field above the upper menu.
After submitting your entry using the button labeled “Go”, EtherScan will start scanning the Ethereum Blockchain for transactions related to the entered address. This may take a while. When the lookup is finished, the service will redirect you to another page where all statistics regarding the address are displayed.
On this page you can see the balance, the value in USD, a overview of all transactions and transfers as well as information of tokens. To see all tokens, press the button labeled “View Tokens”. The number next to the button indicates the number of tokens found on this address.
In the opened dropdown menu, you can see an overview of all tokens including name, amount and value. If you want to find out more about a specific token, you can click on the entry in the dropdown menu. This will open an overview of transactions of that token related to the address.
Here you can see information about the token balance and value as well as general data about the token itself like the contract address and token decimals.
You have now successfully looked up all available data of a address and a token.
